Photo Project
In an effort to actually participate, I’m formally announcing here that I’m going to participate in Brian Auer’s latest photo project – The $50 film camera. Since the Fujica camera I got earlier this year had the shutter freeze on it and the Mayima has major issues with the focusing system, I recently set out to pick up a new film camera.
My brother is an art professor and turned me on to the Pentax K1000 (pictured), which I just picked up off of eBay for $46 (plus shipping, which put it over the $50 mark, but I’m not counting the shipping.)
The project basically has a few concepts:
- Find a film camera for under $50 (check)
- Shoot some film with the camera (in-progress)
- Write a review of the camera
- Publish a photo of the camera
- Publish an entire roll of photo (including the duds)
- Submit a link to all of the above on Brian’s blog here
- Do it by September 12, 2008
The project has a couple prizes attached, namely a Diana+ camera from Lomography and a whole punch of Ilford film. I’ve got a roll of Velvia in the camera already and have taken a few frames with it. The last time I shot some film I took forever to develop it, so hopefully this gives me some impetus to move quickly.
If you want to participate, you can check out the full details on Epic Edits.

This actually sounds pretty cool. Though my photo ability is even worse than my gardening ability, I am definitely interested in seeing what others turn out. Looks like I will be checking out Brians blog!
There’s lot of good old cameras out there. Why not get a few more (warning, warning – it can become an addiction)?
The russians with theyr Zenits are nice. And why not the Yashicas with there wonderful ML-lenses. If you keep an eye out for Praskticas you might find some with a hidden Zeiss-lens for a couple of dollars (my wonderful Zeiss Sonnar 135mm cost me about $15). Good luck, I will also give it a try
Yeah, I have to resist. I’m happy to have a functioning film camera again. I still would like to find a cheap 120 camera, so winning the Diana would be nice.
[...] I took a few shots of my new camera as part of a photo project. This is a Pentax K1000 – 100% manual 35mm camera. I’ll be writing up a review of it and posting an entire roll of film shot with it. For more information see here. [...]
Derek: my spelling seemed a bit of yesterday, sorry
Anyhow, I got an Agfa Isolette V (120-format). But it would be fun with a bit more modern one. The old bellow / fold-cameras are so hard to use, I’ve taken 2 rolls so far but I really don’t know at all if I got the right focus. Probably all pictures will be doubleexposed blur
That was my issue with the Mayima Press 23. It’s a rangefinder, so I had to trust the focus mechanism, which when I got the two rolls back I found out was not working right. I’d have understood if it was one or two frames were bad, but every one was consistently out of focus. Probably the only thing I could do is pick up a ground glass back for it, which would have the benefit of being able to use the tilt and shift functionality.
[...] other good news is I finished the first roll of film in the K1000. I just need to get it processed and [...]
