I picked up a K1000 at a pawnshop after trading in a previously purchased Canon A series slr that was damaged. The 50mm lens was trashed so purchased a ricoh 30-70mm zoom for it and have shot a couple rolls of film. I haven't had time to develop them yet. Having to learn to adjust fully manual is a good learning tool for a beginning photographer.

A few weeks ago I heard an NPR story on Robert Frank and his book The Americans. After looking at his photos online I decided I wanted to take pictures. So I signed up for photography/darkroom classes at the New Space here in Portland.

I took the adivice of this review along with several others and bought a Pentax k 1000 off of ebay (with brown leather) with two lenses, flash, bag and shipping for $150. They stated that it was in perfect working order and that the lenses had no scratches.

Any recommendations for scanners?

I don't know of any offhand, but I've seen many adapters for different mounts. Most are custom fabrications. I did see something awhile back that Carl Zeiss makes K-Mount lenses now, but that doesn't help with any lenses you already own.

I just bought a K1000, I have found all the reviews very interesting and I am glad I bought the camera. I also bought a new Nikon D700 for digital use, but I like the manual and film too. Do you know if I can get an adaptor to use for my Carl Zeiss lenses on the K1000. I have a 2 55mm and one 67 mm filter size. Thanks, Lynn

I own this camera myself. I have the SE model with the split image focusing. I prefer to use this camera about all the others I own when doing portraiture. The photos come out so crisp and full of detail. It's quite a gem and I paid a lot more than you did for it, but it's worth every penny. It's a shame that shooting 35mm is a dying art.

lol. The price was at the top right in front of me the whole time! It's late and I'm tired, but that's no excuse :D

What you paid seems quite reasonable - I'll have to keep an eye out.

Thanks, I'm horrible at proofreading my own stuff.

I paid $56 after shipping for the camera and lens (I've noted this in the article). I've seen it for $145 for just the body at my local camera store.

Under "The Verdict" you seem to have a stray sentence at the end of the paragraph :)

I've got loan of a K1000 at the moment from college. It's a beautiful camera! The split focusing screen certainly does make a difference....

You didn't mention how much you paid? After using the college's camera I'm quite keen on buying one, and I'm watching a few auctions on ebay, but I'm a little unsure of the average price.

And those reds certainly seem quite saturated! I have heard that this is a feature of Velivia though. Here's hoping your b/w turns out great too!

The K1000 was what they used to recommend for journalism school too. Cheap and unbreakable. I miss film and meticulous you got be with it. All the different nuances of different films. :)

I found a whack of film when I was cleaning up a barely used closet. I might shoot it to see if it's still good.

[...] This was shot with my Pentax K1000 manual camera on Fuji Velvia 100 Color Reversal Film and processed and scanned by my local lab. I’m not enamored by the results of the scan. Looking at the slide, the colors are much better, but this is the best I could get in the time I had. I may re-scan the set to see if I get better color out of them. The reds seem really over saturated in all of the images off the roll. (the rest of this roll can be found on my write up of the Pentax K1000) [...]
